First impression/review Japanese gel nails

Gel nails Okinawa

On a trip to Okinawa eight weeks ago I decided to get gel nails. I’ve always wanted to try it out and what better place to do so than Japan? I’ve decided to write a first impression/review on my first (Japanese) gel nail experience, covering all from the moment when I first had them done until the day I removed them (pictures included).

Let’s start of with some background information. The quality of my own nails is very bad: they’re dry, thin and always peel off in layers. Now I know that I should condition my cuticles better, but I seem to be allergic on my hands to something in certain creams. I’ll be visiting a dermatologist soon, to hopefully find out what exactly causes my hand eczema.

After a terrible experience with acrylic nails (with tip), they broke within 1,5 week, I was a bit reluctant to try out gel nails. “My own nails break so easily and I always bump them into things, a little layer of gel won’t stop them from breaking,” is what I thought. It turned out I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I’m not a big fan of really long nails so I chose to get gel nails without tip. The package I got, which included the little stones, costed  around €24/$31,5  The lady that did my nails told me they should last about three to four weeks.

gel nails 1,5 week#1,5 week: the gel nails feel super natural. They have grown out about half a centimeter, which is something I’m quite surprised about as my nails usually don’t grow that fast. I’m guessing it’s because they cleaned my cuticles really well. I’m glad I chose to get clear polish, because otherwise the outgrowth would have been very visible.  No chipping so far.

gel nails 3,5 weekskopie#3,5 weeks: My nails have grown so much that I had to file them down a little. The top hasn’t chipped yet except on my index finger, the bottom however has although not much. They said the nails were supposed to last around three to four weeks. I’m quite surprised that the little gemstones are still not coming off at this point. So far I’m thrilled by the quality of these gel nails.

Japanese gel nails removed 8 weekskopie#8 weeks: A few days ago I decided to cut my nails (with the gel still on) and to chip and file the last bits of gel nail of. Only on my thumb a little bit is left. The parts that I managed to file off look super healthy. I didn’t have a good file and was to impatient so I chipped off some of the gel. I really regret doing so as I damaged my nails. The stones were still hadn’t fallen off before I started to remove the gel nails, I’m really amazed by how well they lasted. I forgot to take a picture when my gel nails had grown out the most, but I can tell you that it still looked pretty ok. p.s. I didn’t go to a salon because I feel like they charge way to much just to remove them. If you have a good file it’s not hard to do it your self.

The end result: (Japanese) gel nails are amazing! My nails didn’t break, didn’t get damaged and looked amazing. Now looking at my plain boring broken nails I feel the urge to get gel nails again. I found a place where they don’t charge extra for nail art or stones, but it’s still double the price as in Japan. Will let you guys know if I decide to get gel nails again.

With Love,

Elise Mooijman
